Earthship homes were the idea of New Mexico based architect Michael Reynolds who has been developing them for over 30 years.

Building an earthship is building with nature in mind and living in one means being free from the system; they are self sustaining homes. Most materials used are recycled or repurposed that are readily available for free or at a very inexpensive cost. Walls can be built from rammed earth and stacked tires, plastic and aluminum bottles.

Their design takes into account:
  • Solar passive design
  • Rain water harvesting
  • Grey water recycling – collection and reuse-
  • Sewage treatment –containment and distribution-
  • Renewable energies such as wind and solar power –photovoltaic arrays and wind turbines
  • Food production

All in all is about living in harmony with mother earth.
